Can Marketing be Taught?

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

Marketing is not just 'selling' or 'advertising', there is more to it. It has a great impact on the business of a company or a brand and is given the utmost priority, as it fulfills a lot of purposes of the business.

Succeeding in the modern marketplace that too with the marketing being taught in the classrooms- is it worth it? Being a part of a B-school where education is given the utmost priority encouraged me to give it a thought.

Designing Marketing

Marketing succeeds only when all the departments counting from production, finance, purchasing, and accounting as well as others work together to achieve their common goals.

Marketing is just a simple word! But ever thought the impact it makes to a business and the purpose it fulfills. The thing we should note down is that 'marketing' is different from 'advertising' and 'selling'.

"We can presume that the essence of marketing consists of satisfying consumer's needs, creating value and retaining the customers."

So is there any rule to it?

What I have learned is that Every culture has a set of values that they hold very clear. So when we create 'brands' we ensure that it is created with a set of values, and these values have to reflect in the region where we are 'marketing' our 'brand'. This is also known as the Golden rule of marketing.

Marketing Defined ?

Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, and delivering offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society.

Marketers work to identify unmet or partially satisfied consumer desires so they can create and promote better offerings.

What else is required when we think of Marketing a brand or a company?

There is something called Culture and Subculture which as two important aspects of marketing.

There is something called Culture and Subculture which are two important aspects of marketing.

When we are a brand & are having certain values attached to our business, we will also have to adjust our 'product' and its marketing 'according to the culture and subculture that we are targeting. Culture and subculture can be of different types, (such as religious subculture). These affect the way companies do marketing. (sub-culture is the part of the culture.)

Example: Let's take an example of a company selling consumer durable, and let's assume that we want to sell our product in the state of Gujarat, then we will have to look for the time of Navaratri. In the same way, let's suppose now we want to sell our product in the state of Kerala, then it will be more like the occasion of Onam that will be considered as the change in marketing by the companies/brands due to change in culture and subculture.

So where does it all come from?

Our Values are one of the most important things to consider because:

So, this was as far as the golden rule and introduction to marketing that is concerned. There is more to it. To get deeper into it, we have to study culture in more detail because a large part of who we are is because of the functions of the culture that we belong to. Good Luck!
